A downloadable game

Radiant Sword was my Final Fantasy Tactics-inspired strategy RPG project that was in on-and-off development for 9 years. It was, sadly, canceled in 2026 after continued development became unsustainable. But the hard work that went into it still deserves a tombstone!

That's the reason this level selector is here. You can open any map file in the game and start playing from there, and even continue your progression like a normal playthrough, if you like. There are over 100 completed scenes in the build, so there's a lot you can play around with.

Game features:

  • Rich turn-based combat across dynamic, vertical maps
  • Three-tier character customization system using the Cross Paradigm grid
  • Hundreds of active and passive abilities to select from
  • Link Reactions allow comrades to support each other through teamwork
  • Use weird techniques like Philosophy, Money Skill, Alchemy, Monster Taming, Trading, Fox Trickery, and more
  • Detailed retro visuals using mixed 2D/3D rendering
  • Open-ended, nonlinear world map progression
  • Story-rich campaign with dramatic, theatrical cutscenes

It's pretty sweet! I think you'll find there's a lot to chew on, despite the unfinished state. But, please keep in mind that this game really is *incomplete,* and development did not stop at a clean, polished spot. That means:

  • It's very buggy and game balance is lopsided. You will encounter progression blockers and showstoppers. It's possible to maintain a consistent playthrough for most of the campaign, but nothing is guaranteed to work, and it's not guaranteed to be well-balanced, either. You might just get one-shot by something that's using outdated combat math.
  • The publisher and credits from the intro are all fictional. I just kinda liked the idea of LARPing as a Japanese studio from the late 90s, to give that perfect time capsule feeling. But everyone credited here is made up.
  • Most of the audio is placeholder. There are a handful of original compositions and homebrewed SFX completed for the game, which you'll hear in the opening stages. But the majority of music and SFX during development were lifted from classic RPGs, with the intention of being replaced later on. Retro RPG fans will almost certainly recognize them.

Rather than leaving most of the game in awkward silence, or with hastily chosen open source audio, I've opted to leave the copyrighted placeholder audio in. I think they're important for showing my intention and what I was trying to build towards. This is, after all, a snapshot of what the game was at the moment development ended. I hope that this doesn't present a copyright issue, since I'm not accepting payment for it, and I believe this is a valid fair use case. But if DMCA issues rear their head, I'm not about to pick a fight over it.

All this to say: most of the audio is not mine, it's from copyrighted games, it would have been removed in any finished version of the game that I charged money for, and I'm not trying to mislead anyone to believe otherwise!

That's all. I really hope you enjoy spelunking through what I've made! <3 Will hopefully add Mac/Linux builds in the near future.

I don't have a windows machine, but you better believe when I do I will be playing the heck out of this level selector. I read your goodbye radiant sword post and thought it was beautiful writing: cant imagine how beautiful the writing would be in a game you made (writing is most of what I care about in games!) Congrats in walking away from a project you have been working on for that long....takes guts!

I am wishing you luck in finding your trans & queer dev community to make an awesome game, if not this game, than another. If not, I am ringing bells for all the trans dancing joyful community you want!

And personally, most of the game devs I have ever met who make JPRGs over the past ten years have been transwomen (or at least some kind of transfemme or "no longer man" (im that last one!) so maybe you can have both :)

Thanks for making something so amazing, even if it is unfinished :)

  • Found out about this project yesterday while searching up some old "alpha" trailers of FFT as research for the narrative for my own FFT-like project and absolutely fell in love with what your team did here! Downloaded the demo on your Itch.io and I've been combing through it for a bit today and while there's a bit of jank (as to be expected of such a large scale cancelled project) like saves not loading properly or the concept of putting an enemy capable of summoning a vampire wolf on the second level of the game, there is still, frankly, an absolutely RIDCULOUS amount of heart in this!? I made a reddit post linking back to the demo video on Youtube because I really think that this sorta thing deserves to be celebrated, even if in post-mortem, simply bc it's clear how much work you all put into this! Is there anyway to contact you in an offical capacity? I wouldn't be any real help in getting this finished, per se, but as one aspiring storyteller and fan of FFT/LUCT to another, I would LOVE to compare narrative/thematic notes and just pick your brain about the development process that went on! This seems like it would've been the best parts of FFT and LUCT, and it's a god damn shame that it's been deemed as infeasible to finish bc God knows Square's never gonna give us anything half as badass as this ever again, sigh
